Why Should We Take Gym Class - 1275 Words

Blessing in Disguise The mile. These two words used to scare the living daylights out of me. As a young child, I was by far the most unathletic kid in my gym class, and I truly dreaded going there every day. My parents knew this, and they fought for an alternative for me-- an alternative that I am unbelievably glad they were denied. Because one day, I decided that it was within my power to change myself, and now, I realize that being forced to take gym class had enormous benefits that impacted my whole life. Had my parents been successful in removing me from gym class, I would be a completely different person-- a lesser person. The benefits I received as a child from taking physical education were invaluable. A copious amount of concerned parents have raised the issue of individuality vs. conformity, or letting students choose whether or not they want to take the class vs. forcing them to, pertaining to physical education. Conformity is the wise choice-- schools should make gym a man datory class every year. Because physical education improves a student’s health, encourages teamwork, and boosts academic performance, the sacrifice of individualism is well worth it in the end. Schools must make students conform when it comes to the popular debate on physical education primarily for health reasons. To begin, obesity is a growing problem in the United States, and along with obesity comes a plethora of health problems such as heart disease and diabetes (Menza).
